Up to your ears!
Since we’re leading up towards the end of the fiscal year it seems that most people are ‘up to their ears in work’ (so busy)
Yesterday we studied an ear idiom – ( I’m all ears! ) and on the 10th of Feb we studied: Play it by ear. so here’s another ear idiom: ‘Up to your ears!’
Up to your ears – too much of something in most cases, too much work or very busy. 何かでいっぱいなこと、主に仕事などで超忙しいこと
- I’m up to my ears in work! 仕事が超忙しいよ！
- We’ve been up to our ears in cleaning the Queen’s English school! クイーンズイングリッシュスクールをぴっかぴかにするので忙しかったよ！It looks great!! でもきれいになったね！
You can also use ‘up to your eyes’, – (Same meaning) 同じ意味で「目」も使えます。
Here’s a conversation:
A: Where have you been? どこに行ってたの？
B: Sorry, I’ve been up to my ears in housework! ごめんね、ちょっと家の雑用でいっぱいいっぱいでさ。
A: Really, let me help you! そうなの、手伝うわよ！
B: That’s okay don’t worry. I’m almost finished. 大丈夫心配しないで、もうほとんど終わったんだ。
Okay, I hope you’re not up to your ears because of the fiscal year. I know it’s a busy time for Japanese companies at this time.
Homework:
The next time you’re too busy doing something remember to say: “I’m up to my ears in …!”
