You Can’t Judge a Book by its Cover
Today, the phrase to learn is:
You Can’t Judge a Book by its Cover, which means that you shouldn’t make an opinion based on what you see.
This term is usually used when meeting people you don’t know and really means you should not form opinions on first appearances. But the term “you can’t judge a book by its cover” can also apply to things, other than people.
For example, if someone is telling you about a film, they can influence your opinion on that film. You should not really form an opinion of that film, without seeing it yourself.
Examples:
- Someone told me about a nightclub and said it was horrible. It didn’t look very good from the outside either, so I didn’t go there. However, another night I decided to give it a try and it was excellent. It just goes to show that you can’t judge a book by its cover.
Homework:
- If you have met someone new recently, but have not talked to them much and you have already decided that you don’t like them very much from first appearance, then talk to them some more. You may be surprised and change your mind.
